Born in California, Hector felt fortunate to be surrounded by most of his family. However, when he was just two years old, his dad unexpectedly passed away. Due to gang activity and violence in the area, Hector moved to Wisconsin with his mom and brother when he was seven to live with his uncle, aunt, and cousin. These drastic life changes and childhood trauma led Hector to lash out, model bad behavior, skip school, and exhibit anger issues. Arriving at Rawhide in April 2024 at 14 years old, Hector felt quiet and reserved. “I was the new kid and didn’t know anyone,” said Hector. “I tried to talk to people, but I am usually shy.” Since then, Hector has focused on turning his life around and becoming a hardworking young man. By setting realistic goals and seeing progress, Hector is motivated to accomplish anything he wants. “I used to be lazy, but now that I’m working hard and working toward completing my goals, I know that I can achieve accomplishments,” said Hector. “I want to do the opposite of what I did in the past.” During his time at Rawhide, Hector is practicing coming out of his shell. He embraced the opportunity to work at two of our recent Fish Fries to focus on his social skills and earn money. “I’m having fun working at the Fish Fries because I like to keep busy,” shared Hector. He is also learning to express his thoughts and feelings more openly. “My head feels empty sometimes, but it’s easier to get my thoughts out to [my therapist] Ms. Gabby. She told me that what I’m doing is really impressive.” Equine-assisted therapy has had a tremendous impact on Hector. “The horses help me get the words out,” said Hector. “Sometimes I’ve stuttered in the past and with equine therapy, it’s becoming easier.” Hector’s favorite part about Rawhide is the variety of experiences. “From working different jobs around campus to taking the career development class, I’m excited to continue learning new things.” After completing his program, Hector plans to graduate high school, go to college, get a nice job, and be more independent. “I want to focus on my work ethic and complete my future goals—one by one.” Hector’s message to donors: Thank you for supporting everything that Rawhide offers; I appreciate it.
