At just 15 years old, Damarion has already faced his fair share of challenges. Living with his aunt and younger sister in Milwaukee, Damarion’s anger issues became overwhelming, leading to conflict. With no healthy outlet for his emotions, he often felt isolated and misunderstood.

When he arrived at Rawhide in May 2024, Damarion wasn’t sure what to expect. “The first couple of weeks, I was quiet and reserved,” he shared. “I was just trying to figure everything out. But after a while, I warmed up.”

Though he’s naturally shy, he’s also full of energy, especially when it comes to sports. His passion for basketball gave him the courage to join the Starr Academy All-Starrs and spend time with his teammates. “Basketball is my favorite part of Rawhide,” he said. “And my living unit supervisor, Ms. Barbara. She’s funny and fun to be around. I feel comfortable opening up to her.”

Beyond basketball, Rawhide has given Damarion new experiences. Along with excelling academically, he completed the career development class with Goodwill NCW and now plans to enroll in the welding course through our behavioral job training program. He also participates in Young Life Club and equine therapy, and had the opportunity to work at our Fish Fries.

Therapy has been another bright spot. His therapist, Ms. Tina, brings laughter into their sessions. “We laugh a lot,” he shared. But beneath the humor, he’s done the work—learning how to stay calm, how to walk away when tensions rise, and how to keep his focus on one goal: going home.

When he goes back home to Milwaukee, he plans to graduate high school, get a good job, and stay healthy. “Five years from now, I just want to be doing well—working, staying out of trouble, and being happy.”

Damarion hopes the staff and youth at Rawhide will remember him as a joyful, funny kid. When asked about his proudest achievements, he said, “Earning Student of the Month. And my vertical—30 inches high!”

Damarion’s message to donors: “Thank you for allowing us opportunities to learn and grow.”
